Course: No Democracy Lasts Forever: A Conversation with Dean Erwin Chemerinsky (OSH-ERWIN)

In his most recent book, constitutional scholar, litigator, and University of California-Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky warns that 'American Democracy is in Grave Danger,' as political polarization, decisions by a partisan Supreme Court, and anti-democratic features inherent in the US Constitution have combined to create the possibility of perpetual minority rule. Dean Chemerinsky will discuss how the Constitution, as initially drafted and as recently interpreted by the Supreme Court, has contributed to the demise of democracy. After his initial presentation, he will entertain questions in a conversation with long-time Osher instructor and retired lawyer Tom Cox, in which Dean Chemerinsky will discuss options for addressing this crisis for democracy, including whether it may be time to consider adoption of a new constitution.
