Course: Upstanders Unveiled (OSH-UPSTNDR)
You probably know what a bystander is. What about an 'upstander'? Hint: It's the exact opposite. You'll learn more about upstanders, and their critical role throughout history, in this class. You'll meet upstanders like Oskar Schindler, who became famous for saving Jews from the Holocaust by recruiting them to work in his factory. But you'll also learn about less-known upstanders (some of them local) all of whom made an impact on society and sometimes, saved lives and changed history.
These courageous people and their stories are part of a class curriculum developed by local teachers and Chutzpah and Courage, a Virginia nonprofit devoted to supporting Holocaust education and working to fight intolerance, discrimination, injustice and antisemitism. Each lesson helps students learn how to stand up and speak out when they see discrimination, bullying and other forms of hatred around them.
