Course: The Spanish Empire Brings America to the Mediterranean (OSH-SPNSHEMP)
This talk draws on previous presentations about Spain and its colonial Caribbean and links these times to the broader picture of Spain throughout North American, including Florida, Mexico (California) and the US southwest. A major point of this talk is how Spain intervened in the American Revolution, based in the Caribbean, that led to Cornwall's defeat at Yorktown. We also look at pirating in reverse and find Spain's experience rooted in pirates like those of the Barbary Coast, who spread their influence to the Caribbean. The Spanish used both pirates and the evasion of pirates to bring Caribbean wealth throughout the Mediterranean.
