Course: Osher at Dartmouth 2026 Summer Lecture Series, How is Artificial Intelligence Transforming America? Lecture 5 (OSH-PXDART17)

2026 marks two significant milestones in the history of our country and the technological advances that our society, and indeed the world, have experienced. This year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It is also the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Dartmouth summer conference, where the term 'Artificial Intelligence' was first used. While the Declaration proclaims, 'We hold these truths to be self-evident�' the rapid advance of AI into our daily lives has the potential to impact that fundamental belief. AI represents a set of technologies that are reshaping nearly every dimension of modern life: from medical diagnostics and scientific discovery to communication, creativity, and the ways we make everyday decisions. AI has the potential to become a practical tool worth understanding, as well as a confounding puzzle when it comes to detecting truth. Beyond the potential misrepresentation of reality, the development and use of AI may have a significant economic, ethical, and environmental impact. This year's Osher at Dartmouth Summer Lecture Series, featuring presentations by six experts across a wide range of fields, will provide clarity, context, and confidence to anyone, novice and expert alike, in seeking to understand the benefits and challenges of Artificial Intelligence.

Michele Flournoy

Biography: Mich�le Flournoy is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of WestExec Advisors, and a Co-Founder, former Chief Executive Oaicer, and now Chair of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). Mich�le served as the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from February 2009 to February 2012. She was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense in the formulation of national security and defense policy, oversight of military plans and operations, and in National Security Council deliberations. She led the development of the Department of Defense's 2012 Strategic Guidance and represented the Department in dozens of foreign engagements, in the media and before Congress.Prior to confirmation, Mich�le co-led President Obama's transition team at the Defense Department. In January 2007, Mich�le co-founded CNAS, a bipartisan think tank dedicated to developing strong, pragmatic and principled national security policies. She served as CNAS' President until 2009, and returned as CEO in 2014. In 2017, she co-founded WestExec Advisors, a strategic advisory firm.Mich�le serves on the boards of CNAS, Booz Allen Hamilton, the Council on Foreign Relations, Amida Technology Solutions, and CARE. She serves on a number of advisory boards, including for The Leadership Council for Women in National Security, The Mission Continues, PIMCO, and Girl Security. She is a member of the Aspen Strategy Group. She is a former member of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and the CIA Director's External Advisory Board, and the Secretary of Defense's Defense Policy Board.Mich�le earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a master's degree from Balliol College, Oxford University, where she was a Newton-Tatum scholar.
