Course: George Gay, sole survivor of Torpedo Squadron 8 at Midway (OSH-GGAY)

Fought in June 1942, the Battle of Midway is considered to be the turning point of the Pacific War. There are many stories of heroism, determination, and plain good luck associated with this famous battle. One involves Torpedo Squadron 8, based aboard the USS Hornet, one of the participating US aircraft carriers. During the battle, the entire squadron of 15 aircraft was shot down, with only one pilot, Ensign George Gay, surviving. This class will summarize the Battle of Midway, and its impact on the outcome of the World War II in the Pacific. However, the focus will be on Torpedo Squadron 8, and its role in the engagement. Finally, the presentation will discuss Ensign Gay's role in the battle and squadron, and his miraculous story of survival.
