Course: Our Curious Constitution (OSH-CURCNS1)

Our Constitution is a remarkable, but very curious, document. Although it establishes the foundation for our entire system of government, it is relatively short. Although it constructs our government on fundamental principles of political science such as 'separation of powers,' 'federalism,' and 'checks and balances,' it never uses those actual terms. At the same time, it contains several peculiar phrases such as 'corruption of blood,' 'letters of marque and reprisal,' and 'bills of attainder.' Readers of this document are often puzzled by such curious terminology.

In this course we will analyze the structure and wording of the Constitution through some of its more curious features. Using statements from the Framers and modern-day examples, we will see how the various provisions of the Constitution fit together. We will discern the fundamental themes that the Constitution articulates. We will also see how those curious phrases reinforce and animate the Constitution's fundamental principles. As we engage in this overall review, we will also look some of the challenges in interpreting this document. Attendees should expect to obtain a deeper understanding and appreciation of this fascinating document.
