Course detail: Emotional Intelligence: Empowering Conflict Resolution in Law Enforcement
Emotional intelligence (EQ) and the ability to resolve conflict is often at the heart of a law enforcement officer's day. The skills not only help with your work and private life but give you a better understanding of yourself. Many controversial events that have occurred within the profession have been born out of an officer's lack of EQ or their inability to control emotions.
Participants will learn what emotions are, how to identify them and what we should do with them. We will also discuss how having emotional intelligence can make you more successful as a law enforcement officer. Without emotional intelligence, officers try to ignore, escape, or numb out their emotions. The resulting long-term affect can cause medical, mental health issues, and problems at work and home.
Participants will learn how conflict and hard conversations differ in their private lives and at work. We will introduce conflict theory, intervention strategies and techniques for managing difficult conversations and situations that a law enforcement professional will encounter. Participants will explore the science behind conflict resolutions and gain new tools and skills so they can better defuse difficult situations and build trust by interacting in a more intentional way. In the end, you will have the tools to better interact with others, understanding their mindset and how emotions act on you and them as human beings.

- Develop and practice communication strategies for defusing tense situations
- Develop an understanding of the dynamics of conflict in interpersonal and work-related relationships
- Explore the impact of emotion, language, power, and many other aspects of identity on conflict and strategies for conflict management

Notice of Availability of the KLETC Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online at: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.
The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on On-Campus; in On-Campus Student facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public property, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
