Kansans Live WELL is a three-day professional development workshop for K-12 STEM and agriculture educators hosted by the Kansas Geological Survey and funded by the Aquifer Water Quality Assessment for Kansas (AWQUA) program. The workshop is designed to deepen educators' understanding of water quantity and quality in Kansas through hands-on learning, field experiences, and direct interaction with scientists, policymakers, and water professionals.

Throughout the workshop, participants will explore the interconnected systems that provide, protect, and sustain Kansas water resources. Topics include surface water and Kansas waterways, groundwater and aquifers, water quality challenges, and the role of science in water management and policy. Participants also will be introduced to the DRINK Water App Program and classroom resources that support place-based environmental education.

The workshop combines current scientific research with practical classroom applications, giving educators opportunities to learn alongside experts while experiencing activities they can adapt for their students. By the end of the program, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of Kansas water resources, lesson plans and activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, and a network of colleagues committed to water education.

Teachers earn 26 professional development points through Jayhawk Global, which can be applied toward license renewal / salary advancement. All participant expenses-including lodging, meals, and mileage reimbursement-are covered through the AWQUA program.

Participation in the institute requires an application and acceptance prior to registration, as space is limited. Interested teachers must apply by July 25, 2026 at: https://kgs.ku.edu/KLW

Teachers who are accepted into the program will receive instructions to complete their official registration through Jayhawk Global. To secure a spot in the institute, accepted participants must complete registration by August 1.

Course Outcomes:

Teachers participating in the Kansans Live WELL course will:

• Deepen understanding of water quantity and water quality issues affecting Kansas.
• Explore surface water systems, groundwater, aquifers, and other Kansas water features through place-based learning.
• Learn from hydrogeologists, state agency professionals, water resource experts, and policymakers.
• Participate in hands-on investigations, field experiences, and collaborative discussions.
• Explore the DRINK Water App Program and resources for classroom use.
• Receive Next Generation Science Standards-aligned lesson plans, activities, and free classroom materials.
• Build professional connections with fellow educators from across Kansas.
• Upon successful completion of the course, receive a signed KU certificate documenting the 26 professional development points.
