Course detail: Child Passenger Safety Technician Course

Course Description:
The majority of car seats are installed incorrectly. To help parents and caregivers ensure children are as safe as possible in vehicles, KTSRO hosts Child Passenger Safety Technician Training courses around Kansas throughout the year.

The course is 3 days and, upon its completion, will certify successful participants as a National Child Passenger Safety Technician through Safe Kids Worldwide for 2 years. KTSRO also provides yearly opportunities for recertification.

The standardized child passenger safety technician (CPST) certification course  combines classroom instruction, hands-on work with car seats and vehicles, and a community safety seat checkup. Attendance is required for the entire course.

Participants must be 18 years old by the time the training begins.

Course Objectives:
  • Select appropriate child restraints and secure children in vehicle restraint systems.
  • Install child restraint systems in multiple types of vehicles.
  • Teach others how to install restraint systems in vehicles according to CPS best practice guidelines.
  • Organize and coordinate a child restraint system check up event.
  • Respond appropriately to issues related to the role of child passenger safety technician.
  • Serve as a resource to the community/state/organization relative to child passenger safety.

The National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (NCPSCTP) will be used for the class, including all the practical and written testing procedures. There will be a public check up event at the end of the class. Check up event attendance is required for certification.
