This course is restricted to US military law enforcement personnel along with other local, state, and federal civilian law enforcement employees to include criminal analysts, and corrections officers.

Course Description

This course is designed for new and experienced law enforcement officers who have the need to learn how to develop, manage and control drug, gang, terrorist, or other criminal informants by using best practices, lessons learned in the field, and innovative methodologies. Students will learn to adhere to common sense, safety, and legal guidelines while identifying and overcoming problems associated with informants. A review and recommendation for model policies and procedures governing the utilization of informants will be discussed.


Students will be immersed in several challenging practical exercises to help students master effective skills needed for managing informants, especially in difficult situations. Critical topics for effective informant cultivation and management will be discussed, including, but not limited to, tactical operation safety and security, recognizing the characteristics of undesirable informants, recognizing the characteristics of productive informants, identifying informant motivations, and undercover operations involving an undercover officer and an informant. Students will learn how to properly conduct informant identification, documentation, registration, vetting, training, integrity testing, and control, as well as safe and effective tactics for deployment of informants.


This course will instruct officers how to corroborate informant information, how to avoid pitfalls and problems related to informants, how to protect an officer's personal information from informants, and how to develop a productive officer - informant relationship. At the end of this class, students will be well-versed, and experienced in cultivating informants, choosing the best informants, managing many types of confidential informants, controlled calls, controlled buys, understanding the legal case law and guidelines related to drug, and other, informants.
