Course detail: ASLD 609: Practicum in American Sign Language Interpreting

Practicum in American Sign Language Interpreting requires field experience which may include observation, shadowing, teaming, professional responsibilities, duties, and/or activities (e.g., scheduling, preparation, invoicing, meetings, and in-service training) in authentic settings where interpreters are employed. A minimum of 90 hours will be direct provision of interpreting under the supervision of a certified interpreter. Discussion and analysis will occur with instructor and peers on-line and in-person throughout the semester. Students will consult with their advisor prior to enrolling in the course. Prerequisite: ASLD 603 Interpreting: Mediated Communications.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate entry-level knowledge, skills, and behaviors related to the working interpreter's environment formulated through preparation, action, reflection, interpretation, and assessment of learning.
  • Engage in self-reflection through assessing interaction dynamics and how they align with principles of power/privilege, ethical decision-making, professionalism, etc.
  • Develop professional and critical thinking skills and the ability to interact in culturally appropriate ways.
  • Build a network and reputation that can be called upon to work within as a student (future) interpreter
  • Demonstrate exemplary bilingual communication skills throughout practicum experience
  • Display professional behaviors in all situations such as initiative, resourcefulness, good judgement, integrity, dependability, flexibility, appropriate self-confidence, constructive conflict management, etc.
