Kansas Fire Chief 101

Held adjacent to the FRA Seminar

Kansas Fire Chief 101 is a focused two-day development program designed for new and emerging fire chiefs across Kansas. This course ensures that incoming chief officers understand the resources available to them, how to request assistance, key legal and reporting requirements, and the foundational leadership skills needed to succeed in the role. Participants will engage with state agencies, fire service organizations, and peer chiefs through presentations, roundtable discussions, and leadership training.


Who Should Attend

  • Current 5-Bugle Fire Chiefs

  • Chief Officers preparing to move into a 5-Bugle role within the next two years

All meals and lodging are provided (lodging will be at Nickell Hall).


Course Schedule

Saturday, January 17

1:00-1:30 p.m. - Introductions
Meet fellow participants, instructors, and program partners.

1:30-3:00 p.m. - Legal Issues
Overview of key legal considerations and reporting requirements impacting Kansas fire chiefs.

3:00-4:30 p.m. - Fire Chief Fundamentals
Core concepts, responsibilities, and operational expectations for today's fire chief.

4:30-5:00 p.m. - KFRTI
Introduction to available training, resources, and statewide support through KFRTI.

5:00 p.m. - Dinner (provided)

6:00-8:00 p.m. - Roundtable Discussion
Informal, interactive session with KSFFA, the Kansas Chiefs Association, and peers.


Sunday, January 18

7:30-8:00 a.m. - Breakfast (provided)

8:00-8:30 a.m. - FMAK
Updates and guidance from the Fire Marshals Association of Kansas.

8:30-9:30 a.m. - NFPA
Overview of NFPA standards relevant to fire service leadership and operations.

9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. - Introduction to Leadership
A session adapted from the Fire Officer Weekend Series, focusing on effective leadership principles for fire chiefs.

12:00 p.m. - Lunch (provided)

1:00-2:30 p.m. - KSFMO & KDEM
Discussion of legal requirements, policies, procedures, mutual aid processes, and state-level resources.

2:30-3:00 p.m. - Wrap-Up
Final questions, key takeaways, and next steps.
