Babalola Faseru
Biography: Dr. Faseru is a professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Population Health (primary) and the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He is a physician epidemiologist with almost 20 years of research experience examining the efficacy of various tobacco use treatment modalities among African Americans, American Indians, and hospitalized patients. He also serves as consultant medical epidemiologist at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in the Bureau of Health Promotion. He is a Fellow of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT). He obtained his medical degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, lle-lfe, Nigeria; Master of Public Health from the University of Kuopio (now University of Eastern Finland) in Finland with a Postdoctoral Cancer Research Fellowship from the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France. In addition, he completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Smoking Cessation and Nicotine Dependence and a NIH K30 Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center before his faculty appointment. Dr. Faseru is the Director and Founder of the University of Kansas Tobacco Treatment Education Program, and the KU Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training developed with a $514,000 grant from Kansas Health Foundation (2016-2022) and accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Program (CTTTP) in 2020. He is also a certified tobacco treatment specialist trainer. He is a councilor of CTTTP and has served as the chair for the Education Subcommittee of the Tobacco Control and Smoking Cessation Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). In addition, he is Deputy Editor of the Substance Use and Addiction (SAj) Journal, and he provides expert consultation for tobacco control and treatment research and education at the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos in Nigeria. Dr. Faseru was the lead section editor for the section on epidemiology and prevention for "The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), Principles ofAddiction Medicine, 7th Edition" and he served on the program certificate review board for the SRNT University. He received Excellence Award in Public Health Teaching at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2011, 2014 and 2022. He also received the Murray Goldstein Commemorative Lectureship Award in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine in 2021 and the IASLC Lectureship Award for Tobacco Control and Smoking Cessation in 2024.

Support for Tobacco Recovery Training (STaRT) is packed with ideas and tips on how to support people in their tobacco recovery journey. There are eight, 15-20 - minute modules with both audio and visuals. The course addresses the stigma surrounding tobacco use and why tobacco recovery is so important. You will learn how to meet people where they are, avoid confrontation, listen actively, provide up-to-date information, and connect people with free and effective resources.
