Course detail: JOCO CSI: Fundamental Crime Scene Management and Evidence Collection

Course Description

This course provides foundational training in crime scene management and evidence collection for law enforcement professionals. Delivered by active Crime Scene Investigators from the Johnson County Crime Lab, this course is designed to build skills beyond those acquired in the police academy and to strengthen the quality of field level crime scene processing.

Through lecture, hands on practical exercises, and direct coaching, participants will learn how proper evidence collection, documentation, and scene security directly impact investigative outcomes and courtroom admissibility. The course highlights common pitfalls that can result in evidence suppression and emphasizes best practices that support successful prosecution.

Participants will also develop decision making skills related to crime scene escalation, including when to request additional investigative resources. The training reinforces coordination between first responders and specialized crime scene personnel, including the appropriate use of local and state level forensic resources such as the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Core Competency

Participants will apply fundamental crime scene management and evidence collection practices by securing scenes, documenting conditions, collecting physical and biological evidence, and recognizing when to request specialized forensic support to preserve evidentiary integrity and support successful case outcomes.
