Course detail: Investigations Bootcamp
Course Description
The Investigations Bootcamp is an intensive, week-long training program designed to equip newly assigned detectives and investigators with the foundational knowledge, skills, and professional competencies necessary to conduct effective criminal investigations. Through expert-led instruction, case studies, discussion, and practical application, participants will develop a framework for managing investigations from initial response through case preparation.
Topics include death investigations, sexual assault investigations, crimes against children, financial crimes, property crimes, investigative interviewing, crime scene and forensic laboratory resources, crime analysis and intelligence, elder abuse investigations, search warrant preparation and execution, and prosecutorial considerations related to charging affidavits and case development. Instruction is provided by experienced practitioners from law enforcement agencies throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area who bring current investigative practices and real-world perspectives to the classroom.
Core Competency
Participants will possess the ability to apply foundational investigative principles, legal considerations, analytical thinking, interviewing techniques, and available investigative resources to conduct thorough, objective, and legally sound criminal investigations while effectively preparing cases for prosecution.
Learning Objectives

- Explain the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of a criminal investigator.
- Apply investigative principles to death investigations, including natural, accidental, suicidal, and homicide cases.

Course Requirements
- 100% attendance is required for successful course completion.
Required Equipment
Each participant is required to bring the following items to class:
- Laptop computer with Wi-Fi capabilities
- Pen or pencil
- Notebook or note-taking materials
- Refillable water bottle
This equipment is necessary to participate in practical exercises, access course materials, and complete investigative activities throughout the program.
Physical Requirements / Fitness Level: LOW ACTIVE
This course is primarily classroom-based and does not require strenuous physical activity. Participants should be able to sit for extended periods, engage in group discussions and practical exercises, move between classroom locations, and participate in hands-on investigative activities.
Learning Outcome Statement
Upon completion of this course, participants will possess the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to effectively investigate criminal incidents, utilize available investigative resources, and prepare cases for successful prosecution. This course serves as a starting point for continued development in specialized investigative disciplines.
Notice of Availability of the KLETC Annual Security and Fire Safety Report: The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years. A paper copy of the report will be provided upon request.
