Course detail: Edged Weapon Response

This course is designed to equip law enforcement officers with essential skills to recognize, manage, and respond effectively to potential threats involving edged weapons. Participants will gain critical insights into identifying the signs of a potential edged weapon assault and learn techniques to respond appropriately if attacked. 

Key components of the training include: Distance Management and Threat Assessment: Understanding how to maintain safe space upon initial contact and evaluate potential threats. 

Close-Quarter Defense Techniques: Developing the ability to respond effectively to knife assaults in close-range encounters, both standing and on the ground. Participants will focus on mastering the following core skills: 
1. Weapon Avoidance: Identifying potential threats and utilizing effective distance management strategies to prevent attacks. 
2. Weapon Control: Applying techniques to mitigate and neutralize the threat when confronted with an edged weapon. 
3. Disengagement and Transition: Executing safe disengagement and transitioning to primary weapon systems when necessary. 

This comprehensive training prepares officers for real-world scenarios, enhancing their safety and effectiveness in high-risk situations.Students need to bring their duty belt and a training gun. If a training gun is not available, a limited number will be provided. Please contact Amy Osburn at arosburn@kletc.org if a gun is needed or if there are additional questions.Students should wear DT clothing or t-shirts and cargo pants.

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online at: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
