Course detail: Close Quarter Strategies

This 3-day Instructor course is designed to equip officers with practical offensive and defensive tactics they can immediately apply on duty. The course covers ground fighting, strikes, and takedowns. While most defensive tactics (DT) classes require at least a week to train and much longer to become proficient instructors, this course recognizes that many agencies face personnel shortages and cannot dedicate multiple weeks to training officers in a single system. Therefore, it provides essential skills in a condensed timeframe, making it a more realistic and accessible option.

C.Q.S. was developed by many agencies working together and with keeping realistic training time, officer retention of the techniques, and building officers' confidence in the techniques in mind. C.Q.S. techniques are taught at the Johnson County Regional Police Academy which means the newer officers are already familiar with the techniques and can continue to grow in their own proficiency.

The course introduces training tactics and drills not typically found in standard police defensive tactics systems. It aims to enhance the instructor's skills, boost their confidence in self-defense techniques, and improve their effectiveness. Many agencies have adopted this course because it emphasizes the importance of instructors being confident in the techniques they teach; without confidence, or if the techniques are too complicated, they are unlikely to be used in real situations. The C.Q.S. approach employs fundamentally sound techniques that can be integrated into any use of force curriculum. The techniques are simplified, and counter techniques are also taught, ensuring instructors have a comprehensive understanding. Additionally, the course is designed to allow instructors to break down the material into manageable segments, making it easy to train officers in-house and enabling officers to apply the skills immediately in the field.

Notice of Availability of the KLETC Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online at: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

A paper copy of the report will be provided upon request. If you would like to receive a paper copy, you can request that a copy be mailed to you by calling 785-864-6414 or emailing civilrights@ku.edu or arrange for pick-up at a KLETC location.
