Course detail: EVOC Refresher

Proper operation of an emergency vehicle is critical for police officers and public safety. In the Emergency Vehicle Operation course, participants become familiar with terminology, driving skills and liability issues that relate to the operation of a police vehicle, and will equip participants with necessary skills, techniques, and operational principles. 

This 16-hour refresher course includes hands-on driving exercises that will enhance an officer's ability to operate a vehicle during an emergency situation by teaching personal and vehicle control limitations. The class will concentrate on vehicle dynamics, liability, and pursuit management. Participants will be exposed to a variety of driving exercises at the Dodge City Raceway Park. 

The facility offers participants the opportunity to utilize large parking lots, roads, and race track to teach vehicle dynamics, coned skill courses, road course, pursuit, and backing techniques. 

Core Competencies: 
  • Participants will possess the ability to assess different environments, events, and situations and make informed decisions regarding optimal courses of action and techniques, ultimately enhancing safety levels. 

1. Students will review the legal basis and limitations on the use of non-emergency and emergency driving, basic vehicle operation, and defensive driving. 
2. Students will concentrate on good driving behavior and skill development. 
3. Students will use current agency issued emergency vehicles during training on the driving range, while practicing the techniques required for on the job performance. 
4. Each student will be evaluated and receive a written performance evaluation.

 *Each participant must bring their own agency vehicle to be used in the course

The University of Kansas has determined that the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) main campus in Hutchinson and its regional sites in Dodge City, Hays, and Parsons are separate campuses. This determination was made in consultation with the Department of Education. The report is available online at: https://civilrights.ku.edu/clery.

The report contains information regarding campus safety and security including topics such as: campus law enforcement authority; crime reporting policies; campus alerts (Timely Warnings and Emergency Notifications); fire safety policies and procedures; programs to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking; the procedures the institution will follow when one of these crimes is reported; and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about crime statistics for the three most recent calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred On-Campus; in On-Campus Student Housing Facilities; in Non-Campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the institution or a recognized student organization; and on Public Property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.

A refund less a $15.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for all cancellations made in writing prior to 10 days before the start of the event. After that time, no refunds will be made.
