Course detail: Healthy Communication and Conflict Management in Law Enforcement

Course Description: 
The law enforcement profession exists in a complex area of work. Conflicts or escalated encounters that arise at work and in the broader community can result in a loss of productivity, engagement, communication, and general wellbeing for all those involved. Healthy communication and conflict management are just two of the many skills needed to better manage people and relationships, as well as enact needed interventions in the broader community. Law enforcement professionals often stand at the crossroads of many facets of human interaction and engagement, which provides a unique opportunity to practice healthy communication skills, conflict management, and de-escalation more broadly. 

This interactive course will introduce conflict theory, analysis, and intervention strategies and techniques for managing difficult conversations and situations for law enforcement professionals. While this course will address understanding the causes and management of interpersonal conflict at the micro level (family, school, work, community), there will be a special focus on the external work environment of law enforcement. 

Participants can expect to explore their own personal experiences with conflict and resolving conflict, as well as strategies for defusing difficult conversations and behaviors. Come to learn and build skills in dealing with the everyday realities of conflict - from our families to our workplaces and larger society. 
Core Competencies: 
  • Participants will be able to decide upon prescribed courses of action or techniques that will provide a greater level of safety in a variety of environments, events and situations. 
  • Participants will exhibit fairness in policing while giving people a voice and performing law enforcement duties with impartiality and the necessary level of transparency to sustain and strengthen public trust.

  • Develop an understanding of the dynamics of conflict in interpersonal and work-related relationships
  • Explore the impact of emotion, language, power, and many other aspects of identity on conflict and strategies for conflict management
