Course detail: Active Listening: A Critical Communication Technique

Course Description: 

Active listening is one of the most important skills you can have in your professional and personal life. True, effective communication is about more than two or more people talking together. Listening and understanding the underlying meaning (not just the spoken words) requires specific skills, attention and practice. Active listening encompasses the best of communication, including listening to what others are saying, processing the information, and responding to it to clarify and elicit more information. 
This course will focus on providing law enforcement officers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of active listening. Participants will receive multiple opportunities to practice active listening through a variety of practical activities. 

Core Competencies:
  • Participants will be able to decide upon prescribed courses of action or techniques that will provide a greater level of safety in a variety of environments, events and situations.
  • Participants will exhibit fairness in policing while giving people a voice and performing law enforcement duties with impartiality and the necessary level of transparency to sustain and strengthen public trust.

  • Define communication and the differences in hearing and listening.
  • Explain the concepts and importance of active listening.
  • Practice the use of key active listening skills.

For those with dorm room reservation, you may check in the evening before your training starts. Please come to KLETC Entrance A, it is near the flagpole. More information will be provided through email approximately one week before the start of training. Checkout time is 8AM on your departure day or last day of training, please have all personal items removed at that time. Law Enforcement officers attending continuing education training are permitted to carry their firearm while on the KLETC campus. Law enforcement officers carrying a firearm on the KLETC campus must possess appropriate agency identification. We are a tobacco and alcohol-free campus. Refund/Cancellation Policy: A full refund of lodging fees will be available if requested in writing coned@kletc.org or kletc@kletc.org and received by KLETC ten days prior to the beginning date of the seminar. After that date, but prior to the seminar, refunds will be made, but a $25.00 administrative fee will be charged. No refunds will be made after the starting date of the seminar. Cancellation Policy

A refund less a $10.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for all cancellations made in writing prior to 10 days before the start of the event. After that time, no refunds will be made.
