Course detail: Kansas School Resource Officer Basic Training

Creating and maintaining a safer school environment is the primary goal of every SRO.  This five-day training assists SROs in equipping themselves with the information and skills needed to identify, address and prevent crime and violence in Kansas schools.  The 40-hour curriculum will cover SROs major responsibilities as well as Kansas School Laws, Student Development and the Brain, De-escalation  Techniques for Youth, Interviewing Youth, Drug Trends, and Single Officer Response.  

Core Competencies:
  • Participants will be able to identify and explain specific SRO roles as safety experts and law enforcers. 
  • Participants will be able to enhance and demonstrate communication and problem solving skills by engaging in school based scenarios and role playing exercises.

Who Should Attend?
All certified law enforcement officers who are currently assigned or will be assigned as a School Resource Officer. 

Prerequisite:  
Must complete the two online training blocks on Mitigating Exposure to the Criminal Justice System prior to attending the SRO course.  These courses cover the requirements set forth by Senate Bill 367, laws related to the Kansas juvenile justice system.  Additionally, a Bias Free Policing course must be completed prior to attending.
The Office of the Kansas Attorney General will reimburse each participant's agency $300 of the registration fee upon successful completion of the course. This course will meet daily from 0800-1700.  The registration fee includes all meals and lodging; there will NOT be a pro-rated registration fee for those who do not lodge at KLETC.

For those with dorm room reservation, you may check in the evening before your training starts. Please come to the Main KLETC Entrance, it is near the flagpole and marked with a large "A". More information will be provided through email approximately one week before the start of training. Law Enforcement officers attending continuing education training are permitted to carry their firearm while on the KLETC campus. Law enforcement officers carrying a firearm on the KLETC campus must possess appropriate agency identification. We are a tobacco and alcohol-free campus. Refund/Cancellation Policy: A full refund of lodging fees will be available if requested in writing coned@kletc.org or kletc@kletc.org and received by KLETC ten days prior to the beginning date of the seminar. After that date, but prior to the seminar, refunds will be made, but a $25.00 administrative fee will be charged. No refunds will be made after the starting date of the seminar.
