Course detail: CPST - Child Passenger Safety Technician Course
Course Description:
This course is designed to educate individuals who wish to become child passenger safety technicians. Teaching strategies include lecture, hands-on practice and group discussion. Participation in all course activities and successful performance on both examinations and skills evaluations leads to national certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).

Course Objectives:
  • Select appropriate child restraints and secure children in vehicle restraint systems.
  • Install child restraint systems in multiple types of vehicles.
  • Teach others how to install restraint systems in vehicles according to CPS best practice guidelines.
  • Organize and coordinate a child restraint system check up event.
  • Respond appropriately to issues related to the role of child passenger safety technician.
  • Serve as a resource to the community/state/organization relative to child passenger safety.

The National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (NCPSCTP) will be used for the class, including all the practical and written testing procedures. There will be a public check up event at the end of the class. Check up event attendance is required for certification.

Course registration is conducted through SAFE KIDS.

It will be during the SAFE KIDS online registration process that the $85 fee will be collected.  KLETC will NOT collect SAFE KIDS fees.  This is a controlled course through SAFE KIDS.  This fee covers all materials, certification costs, and certificates associated with the program.

Nov Registration at KLETC

Please dress in layers, as the temperature in the room may be difficult to adjust. The session begins at 8:00AM and is estimated to end at 5:00PM each day.

KLETC Dormitory Information:

For those with reservations at KLETC Welch Hall Dormitory, and specifically for those attendees who desire to come in the night before, please come to the Main KLETC Entrance marked on the map, it is near the flag pole and marked with a large "A". You may check into your room between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM Monday through Friday. If you are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, the doors are open 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. If you arrive after 10:00 PM the doors will be locked, however you can contact security at 316-239-8882, and after answering their questions, they will assist you in getting room keys. Checkout time is Noon on your departure day or last day of training, please have all personal items removed at that time.

All lodging attendees will find an envelope containing their room key at the front desk in the main lobby reception area. Sheets and a blanket are furnished for our guests. Items you may wish to bring: Alarm Clock, Bath Towels, Wash Cloths, Soap, Shampoo, Hair Dryer, Pillow and Pillowcase and an Extra Blanket.

Weapon Safety - KLETC adopted a new weapons policy effective July 1, 2017. The concealed carry of handguns shall be permitted on the KLETC Campus, including all buildings and public areas to the maximum extent possible while ensuring the safety of the staff, students and guests in a training environment. The open carry of firearms shall be prohibited unless necessary for instruction in an authorized training program. Nothing in this procedure is intended to interfere with a law enforcement officer performing his or her official law enforcement duties on the KLETC campus. Law Enforcement officers attending continuing education or basic training classes, or are attending meetings or other academy- related events, are permitted to carry their firearm while on the KLETC campus. Law enforcement officers carrying a firearm on the KLETC campus must possess appropriate agency identification. ABSOLUTELY NO student, instructor, or role player is allowed to carry any firearm into an area where signage stating "no live weapons or ammunition is allowed in training safety areas" is present. You are responsible for ensuring that your firearm is secured in a safe, reasonable, and acceptable manner while on the KLETC campus. Questions regarding this policy for continuing education students, instructors or guests may be directed to the KLETC Assistant Director for Professional Development and Continuing Education.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: A full refund of lodging fees will be available if requested in writing and received by KLETC ten days prior to the beginning date of the seminar. After that date, but prior to the seminar, refunds will be made, but a $25.00 administrative fee will be charged. Instructor of Police
Biography: Gary joined the KLETC instructional staff in September 2015 after retiring from the Kansas Highway Patrol with over 27 years of service. In October 1987 he graduated from the KHP Training Academy and was stationed in Marion County. In 1993 he transferred to Stafford County where he remained until he was promoted to Sergeant as Troop F/Wichita Public Resource Officer in 2000. His background in law enforcement includes patrol, collision investigation, field training officer and background investigation. As Public Resource Officer, Gary developed and presented traffic safety programs, instructed Child Passenger Safety Technician certification courses and provided Traffic Incident Management training. He was the Troop F media liaison drafting press releases and providing interviews to television, radio and print media outlets. He has presented at various conferences at the local, state and national level. Gary holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice from Barton Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Fort Hays State University. No image available

Cancellation Policy
A refund less a $25.00 cancellation fee will be assessed for all cancellations made in writing prior to 10 days before the start of the event. After that time, no refunds will be made.
