Course detail: Confined Space Rescue AOT (Awareness-Operations-Technician) - NFPA 2021

Confined Space Rescue AOT is a three-day (24 hours) course designed to meet NFPA 1006, 2021 Edition, Chapters 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3, covering confined space rescue awareness, operations, and technician levels; in addition to OSHA standard 1910.146 Subpart (k) Rescue & Emergency Services. This course covers the basics of technical rope rescue, including but not limited to requirements for working in confined spaces, confined space entry permits, attendant and entrant responsibilities, atmospheric monitoring, hazardous materials, patient retrieval systems, victim removal and methods to complete lock out and tag out of energy isolation systems, allowing for safe for entry by rescuers.

Special Info:
Personal protective equipment is to be furnished by the student and includes an OSHA or ANSI approved helmet with chin strap (fire helmets okay), safety goggles or approved safety glasses (fire helmet shields do not meet this requirement), clean leather work gloves (firefighting gloves are not appropriate), steel toed boots, and durable work clothes (no tank tops or shorts). Fire department SCT or wildland FF gear is recommended.

An SCBA with bottle and properly sized mask are strongly encouraged, but not required.

Persons taking this course must be physically fit, able to do moderate to heavy lifting and able to work in confined spaces.

KU provides accommodations for certification candidates in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Documentation of the diagnosis from a qualified professional, and a request for accommodation, should be submitted in writing to the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute Certification Manager at or call 866-804-8841 at least two weeks prior to the exam. The submitted documentation will help KFRTI identify appropriate accommodations. The two week advanced notice/request allows the Institute to assemble the resources necessary for the accommodation.
