Course detail: Cryptocurrency for the Patrol Officer

Cryptocurrency for the Patrol Officer is a 4-hour foundational course designed to equip patrol officers with the knowledge and practical tools to recognize, respond to, and assist in cryptocurrency-related crimes and scams. As cryptocurrency use and criminal activity become more prevalent in society, officers increasingly encounter cases involving digital assets. This course will introduce participants to common cryptocurrency scams, investigative techniques, and accessible resources to help them effectively handle these situations. Officers will gain confidence in recognizing red flags, gathering initial evidence, and utilizing support from local and federal resources, ensuring they are prepared to engage in this evolving area of crime prevention.

Core Competency:
Participants will produce intelligent, accurate representations of events and situations and provide valid testimony and descriptions of those events when requested. They will also act in ways that support the needs of the community and profession while carrying out the responsibilities of an officer and a member of their respective communities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common cryptocurrency scams and recognize red flags that indicate potential digital fraud.
  • Explain the basics of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology and identify indicators of cryptocurrency use during patrols.
  • Implement immediate actions to support and protect victims, documenting essential information for investigations.
  • Access and utilize available resources, including public blockchain explorers and federal contacts, to assist with initial cryptocurrency-related investigations.
