Course detail: Supervising Special Units

Course Description:

The front-line supervisor is one of the most critical positions in any law enforcement organization. While there are commonalities between managing patrol units and special units, there are also many differences, from our primary functions to how we dress to our decisions. These differences are only sometimes readily identifiable to the newly transferred supervisor. This class will help the special unit supervisor identify and develop strategies for dealing with these unique issues head-on. For this course, a special unit is any unit whose primary duty is not uniformed patrol or conventional investigations. It is a unit with a specific mission outside of what would be considered traditional police work. In this class, we will discuss:
  • Special units overview, including issues that cause friction between patrol and these units.
  • Right and wrong reasons to have special units.
  • Clearly defining your unit's mission.
  • Legal issues.
  • Administrative issues include personnel selection; equipment and training; policy and discipline; and team spirit vs. elitism.
  • Operational issues from the perspective of leading and supervising, including officer safety and high-risk activities.
Core Competencies:
  • Participants will lead and engage people to maximize organizational performance.
  • Participants will use their knowledge, skills, and qualities to effectively perform the functions associated with management in their work environment.
