Course detail: UIOAD - Understanding & Intervention - Older Adults & Dementia

Understanding & Intervention Older Adults & Dementia is a four-hour, one day class (1 p.m.-5 p.m,) designed to assist participants in recognizing consumers presenting with Dementia and/or age related issues in an attempt to better serve those individual's needs during stressful encounters through better communication.


Core Competencies:  
  • Participants will define Dementia and recognize consumers presenting with Dementia and/or age related issues in an attempt to better serve those individual's needs during stressful encounters through better communication.
  • Participants will recognize different stages of dementia and age related issues and describe the challenging behaviors often associated with each stage. 
  • Participants will identify potential communication problems stemming from Dementia and/or age related issues as well as de-escalation techniques.

Primary Course Objectives:

  • Participants will discuss different stages of dementia and age related issues and describe the challenging behaviors often associated with each stage.

  • Participants will analyze given scenarios and discuss appropriate ways in which to engage.
