Course: Grant Writing Basics

Grant Writing Basics is an applied grant writing course for new and experienced practitioners who want to strengthen their ability to develop competitive grant proposals. Participants learn how to identify grant opportunities, use data to document community needs, write clear problem statements, and build strong outcomes, activities, evaluation plans, and budgets. The course emphasizes practical grant writing skills alongside durable strengths in professional communication, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Graduates frequently report increased confidence in their grant-writing abilities and have gone on to secure funding for projects such as park improvements, walking trails, building restoration, leadership programs, arts initiatives, festivals, and other community priorities.
This online microcredential includes two live, 3-hour synchronous sessions supported by a rich set of resources available before, during, and after the course. Participants are encouraged to bring current grant ideas or draft proposals to work on in real time. Interactive discussions, peer feedback, and collaborative activities help you learn from others, expand your perspective, and refresh your approach to grant development.
Grant Writing Basics is the first course in a two-microcredential sequence that leads to the Grant Writing & Development Achievement Badge. When paired with the Grant Development and Management microcredential, this course helps prepare learners to plan, develop, and manage competitive grant proposals that support nonprofits, community organizations, educational institutions, and local governments. Upon successful completion of both microcredentials, the Achievement badge is automatically awarded-no additional steps are required.

The learning experience requires approximately 15 hours and includes instructional modules, small-group interaction, and hands-on writing practice.
