Course: Building AI Student Academic Coaches

Building AI Student Academic Coaches helps K-12 educators design AI-supported tools that give students more opportunities to practice, revise, and think through challenging work, with built-in safeguards that protect student learning and wellbeing. AI does not change what students need to grow as thinkers; it can extend those opportunities when designed with careful human oversight. Using the WISE AI Literacy Framework, participants will design AI study partners that prompt thinking rather than give answers, create structured sequences for writing, problem-solving, or revision, and embed guardrails that encourage genuine student effort and protect student privacy. The course asks educators to anticipate common student misconceptions and design prompts that address them directly. Through guided design and a short classroom pilot, participants will build and document a fully developed student-facing AI tool, such as a writing coach that asks a student targeted questions about their thesis before offering any suggestions, or a math study partner that walks a student through a process step by step without supplying the final answer.

Learning activities take approximately 20 hours to complete and successful participants earn a certificate of completion for 20 hours toward teacher license renewal (e.g., PDPs in Kansas).

Participants have 60 days to complete each offering upon registration. Please consider this when choosing how many courses to register for at the same time.
