Course Description: Rooted Leader: Expansion - Vitality, Interconnection, and Courageous Action
Rooted Leader is a seasonal leadership model that uses nature-based practice and applied reflection to build resilient, high-impact leaders. Each session combines a focused classroom workshop with guided forest immersion at Shevlin Park and results in a practical leadership tool participants apply immediately at work.
Format: This course includes two sessions-one classroom-based workshop followed by a guided forest bathing field experience at Shevlin Park. Outdoor session will proceed rain, snow, or cold with appropriate adjustments. In the event of unsafe conditions, the field component will be modified to an indoor reflective format.
Summer is a season of growth, complexity, and increased demand on leaders. Rooted Leader: Expansion blends a classroom session with guided forest bathing and structured journaling to explore how relationships, communication patterns, and energy influence team performance.
Participants move at a slow, accessible pace outdoors-no hiking required-using observation and reflection to examine how teams function as systems and where leadership behaviors amplify or limit results. This approach draws on research on attention, cognitive restoration, and emotional regulation to support reflective and effective leadership.
Through facilitated activities and the Rooted Leader Journal, you will:
- Map your team ecosystem and identify key collaboration patterns
- Assess where your energy is being overextended or underutilized
- Examine how courage shows up in leadership during periods of high demand
- Commit to one specific leadership action to implement immediately
You will leave with a collaboration strategy, a capacity plan, and practical strategies to sustain energy, strengthen collaboration, and support high performance.
Practical takeaways
- Team interdependence map
- Energy and capacity plan
- Courageous leadership reflection and action commitment
Workplace application
Strengthens teamwork, reduces friction, and supports performance without burnout.
Participants use a session-specific Rooted Leader Journal to document insights and develop a practical leadership action plan. A seasonal sensory element is incorporated to support attention and reflection practices introduced in the course. The seasonal landscape at Shevlin Park provides a distinct observational context for each session, informing reflection and leadership decision-making.
Each Rooted Leader session stands alone and addresses a specific leadership challenge. Participants who attend multiple sessions build a comprehensive leadership practice documented through the Rooted Leader Journal.
