Course Detail: WELL-9272 - Good Grief: Helping Clients With Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders Cope With Loss
This workshop helps build skills for understanding grief. It covers important topics such as the stages of grief, including the sixth stage of finding meaning, and the different types of losses that clients may experience. Participants will learn effective ways to support clients with mental illness and addiction as they deal with complicated grief. The workshop also provides practical strategies for handling grief during the end of counseling. Additionally, participants will learn the ten essential practices of effective grief counselors to help them offer compassionate and meaningful support for those who are grieving.
By the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
- Articulate the differences between grief and mourning.
- Utilize 3 stage based grief models in their work with clients.
- Help clients discover meaning in loss.
- Address Complicated grief.
- Utilize 10 strategies to help clients cope with loss.
- Utilize the termination phase of counseling as grief work.
Class Note: Upon successful completion, three (3) contact hours will be awarded to nurses, counselors, nursing home administrators, and social workers. IAODAPCA hours have been applied for and are pending.
