On April 16, 1846, nine covered wagons left Springfield, Illinois on the 2500-mile journey to California in a caravan that would become one of the greatest tragedies in the history of westward migration. Facing starvation, harsh weather conditions and conflicting personalities, the Donner Party became delayed in their course and lost some 40 members. This class discusses how the Donner Party story has been told differently over time and how the Donner Party has been portrayed throughout history and in literature.
