Course Detail: NATH - Nurse Assistant Theory (Online)

This course is ideal for facilities looking to change their current Nurse Aide Training Program to or establish a hybrid North Dakota Health and Human Services-approved 75-hour Nurse Aide Training Program.

For this class, students will complete a minimum of 43 hours of nurse assistant theory coursework through Blackboard Ultra (https://online.lrsc.edu/) over a period of four (4) weeks. Each week's assignments become available on Mondays. Assignments for the week are due on Sundays. Coursework is completed as students have time during the week. Students do not need to log into class at any designated times. An experienced RN instructor is available to answer questions, will provide feedback on assignments, and encourages student learning.

Online course access will be available beginning 4:00PM CST on the first day of class. Students who already have access to Blackboard will use their current login credentials to access the course. All others will be provided a temporary login ID and password (please watch your email for instructions). Students will be expected to complete and document a minimum of 43 hours of coursework during the four (4) weeks of online theory.

Units of study are introduction to long-term care, communication, infection control, safety, anatomy, physiology of aging, nutrition, skin care, and basic skills (personal care, transferring, positioning, vital signs, elimination, bed making).

Technology Requirements
  1. Microphone: any microphone, either internal or external
  2. Webcam: 320x240 VGA resolution (minimum) internal or external
  3. Desktop or laptop computer. Do not use Google Chromebooks as they are not supported.
  4. Printer (optional, for class handouts)
  5. Reliable, high-speed internet
  6. Desktop Browser - use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge
  7. Access to word processing software that can produce, reading and saving files in the following formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .htm, .html, .rtf, .ppt, .pptx
  8. Yuja software for recording videos and test proctoring
Blackboard is mobile-friendly, however some aspects of coursework will require a PC to complete. Students will be required to create videos, and will need to be able to upload and download files from Blackboard. Students will need internet and email access for this course.

Important Notes
Lab and clinical (required portions of a state-approved 75-hour Nurse Aide Training Program) are not included in this course. These components must be provided by the student's facility with advance approval from North Dakota Health and Human Services to utilize this course as part of their 75-hour training program. Students registering for this course must have prior approval from their employer to register for this course. As of July 1, 2024, individuals will no longer be able to challenge the state CNA exam in North Dakota with no training or having only partially completed training. Individuals will be required to successfully complete a state-approved 75-hour Nurse Aide Training Program to be eligible to take the state CNA exam. Taking only this 43-hour course will not qualify students to take the state CNA exam.

Books are included in the course fee and will be mailed within a week prior to the class start date.

Minimum Age
Students must be 15 years of age by the start date of the course.

English as a Second Language Students
ESL students are highly recommended to take an English assessment exam prior to registration. Information about TOEFL testing availability can be found here: https://www.ets.org/toefl.html.

Felony Disclosure
According to ND Administrative Code 33-43-01-03 and 33-43-01-22, CNA class applicants with a history that includes conviction of a crime substantially related to the qualification, functions, or duties of a certified nurse aide, home health aide, nurse aide, or medication assistant may not be allowed to begin the training program or take the state certification exam without providing specific information relating to their background, criminal history, or impairment. As arrest, conviction, plea, or adjudication that occurred as a juvenile or through juvenile court authorities also applies.

Students must complete a criminal history questionnaire at the time of enrollment in the course. All information disclosed will be reviewed by TrainND Northeast and, if necessary, by the North Dakota Department of Health before students will be allowed to begin class.

Students who have had a prior felony charge may want to inquire with the North Dakota Nurse Aide Registry regarding their eligibility to work as a CNA prior to registering for training.

Registration & Cancellation Policy
Registration for this course will close 5 days prior to the course start date. Books and a copy of the course syllabus will be mailed to students beginning 7 days prior to the course start date.

Cancellation more than 5 days prior to start of training results in a 25% cancellation fee based on the class fee. Cancellation 5 days or less to the start of training results in no refund.
