Course Detail: ELA - Emerging Leaders Academy

The Emerging Leaders Academy uses a relationship-based model to explore topics that are crucial to successful leadership in the 21st century. The content is research-based but practitioner-oriented and classes encourage exploration of how the ideas and skills translate across work domains. As the session progresses, each topic builds on the last to create a broad, practical understanding of working in public service environments to meet the needs of our communities and constituents. Participants will walk away each week with valuable takeaways focused on both immediate practical use and long-term career success.

Topics include:
Interpersonal Communication
Navigating Change
The Neuroscience of Leadership
Strengths-Based Development
Foundations in Equity & Inclusion
Skills for Adaptive Leadership
Reaching Out for Mentoring
Communicating Up
Managing and Moving Through Conflict
Teams and Teamness
Introduction to Public Budgeting

Schedule:

This ELA cohort will meet in a hybrid format. Classes will start on August 15th and will wrap up on December 12th.

  • On August 15th, September 19th, October 17th, and November 14th, we will meet in person from 9:00am to 4:00pm. On December 12th, we will meet in person for final presentations and a graduation ceremony.
  • On September 5th, October 3rd, October 31st, and December 5th, we will meet online via Zoom with the online cohort from 9:00am to 11:30am and from 1:30pm to 4:00pm.
  • For the online course dates, there will also be an "intermission assignment" of up to 45 minutes for participants to complete on their own between the morning and afternoon sessions. Participants should plan for 60 minutes (on average) of work between each class meeting to prepare for class and complete the required assignments.

Since this class will meet partially via Zoom, participants must have access to:

  • A computer or tablet with a video camera. Participants are strongly recommended to have cameras on as much as possible because seeing one another's faces each class greatly facilitates relationship development.
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • The ability to access KU's Canvas system (http://canvas.ku.edu) via an internet browser to access materials and complete assignments. This will work best with Chrome or Firefox as your browser. We will send login information at a later time, but for now just make sure your organization doesn't block access to the site.
  • A location where you can engage without being interrupted. If possible a separate space with a door is preferred, and headphones with a microphone are recommended.
