Course Detail: WELL-9283 - Are You Ready? The Future of Mental Health and Addictions Treatment in America

There are a number of predicted trends which will impact the future of substance use disorders and mental health treatment including: an increase in substance use and mental health crisis nationwide as technology erases millions of jobs; the use of AI and other technologies in treatment; high staff turnover; increased use of evidence based practices; greater emphasis on addressing co-occurring conditions and trauma informed care; younger and older clients; a counselor shortage, a leadership crisis; funding based upon outcomes; changing demographics; increase in the peer workforce; the need to anchor treatment and recovery in the natural environment; more potent drugs; the need for non-traditional funding streams; the need to address the impact of natural disasters which increase SUD use and mental health crisis.

Objectives: by the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
  • Identify 10 predicted trends which will impact the future of substance use disorders treatment.
  • Identify 10 predicted trends which will impact the future of mental health treatment.
  • Utilize strategies to address the predicted trends.
  • Make plans to further develop clinical skills to address predicted trends.
  • Critically think about the leadership skills needed to address predicted trends.
  • Give critical analysis on how to prepare on micro and macro levels for future trends expected to impact SUD treatment and recovery.


Class note: Upon successful completion, three (3) contact hours will be awarded to nurses, counselors and social workers. IAODAPCA hours have been applied for and are pending.
