Course Detail: WTPL550 - Lineworker 3

This 90-hour course meets 4 days a week for 10 hours over two- weeks. As a result of this training students will be able to describe different types of transformers, transformer connections, and overcurrent/overvoltage protective devices then connect three single-phase transformers in a wye or delta configuration on both the primary and secondary sides to deliver three-phase power; describe the basic design, operation, and functions of, as well as the information found on the nameplate of modern single- and three-phase electro-mechanical watt-hour meters; locate and identify the major working parts and controls of bucket trucks, conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection of the truck unit, describe the safety factors to consider when operating bucket trucks and for handling traffic conditions safely paved, unpaved, and hilly work surfaces in both open and obstructed areas. Then demonstrate the common methods of bucket truck escape, emergency boom lowering, and bucket truck rescue; demonstrate and explain some of the common techniques used for climbing steel poles including the basic equipment used, the typical hazards encountered on steel poles and towers, and typical inspection of the equipment, tools, and structures prior to ascending and descending lattice towers; and describe the general procedures for working with overhead transmission, including testing, de-energizing, isolating, grounding, and tagging a transmission line.

Schedule: This is the 3rd Lineworker lab course. Class meets Monday through Thursday from 04/25/2024 to 05/09/2024 in the Miller Electrical Training Pole Yard promptly at 7am for safety tailboard, and ends at 5:30PM. Classes may meet in Miller MCPC120A if weather prevents lab work.

Labs are held in the Miller Electrical Sector Training Pole Yard or in Miller Campus MCPC room 120A if weather prohibits lab work. ** Students should plan to have their tools available and be ready for the safety tailboard meeting promptly at 7am. ** Please watch Canvas and pay attention to communication from Instructors regarding practical lab opportunities with our utility partners that may change lab location.
