Workforce Training Programs

This series of eight courses meets the elementary methods competency-based requirements of Utah State Board of Education (USBE) for Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing (APPEL) candidates to earn a Professional Educator License (PEL) in the state of Utah. Each course is competency-based with teacher candidates proving competency at both the application and demonstration levels in the areas of literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, PE, health, and fine arts.

Student Consent for Release of Records
To receive MIDAS credit, Utah state educators must complete the Student Consent for Release of Records Form. This form authorizes SLCC to share your final grade with the Utah State Board of Education (USBE).

Requirements:

  • You must earn a grade of C or higher.
  • Submit a physically signed copy of the consent form.
  • Include a valid, unexpired photo ID (scan or clear photo).

This program is designed for K-12 educators seeking a health endorsement from USBE. Courses include Methods of Teaching Health; Mental Health and Substance Abuse Prevention; Nutrition, Safety, and Disease Prevention; and Human Development/Human Sexuality. As a result of this training, students will be able to develop and implement lesson plans aligned with Core Standards for Human Sexuality, Mental Health and Wellness, Nutrition, Safety, Disease Prevention, and Substance Abuse Prevention; apply trauma-informed teaching practice in lesson development and instruction; examine the effects of healthy relationships on all aspects of health and wellness.

This 45-hour, 3-credit course is for special education teachers seeking a Secondary Special Education Mathematics Endorsement or the Alternate Pathway to Professional Educator License-Special Education (APPEL-SPED). This course provides educators with the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to effectively teach mathematics at the secondary level. Emphasizing alignment with grade-level standards, the course focuses on systematically designing instruction toward a specific learning goal by integrating cross-disciplinary skills, a variety of instructional strategies, and the application of mathematical concepts in real-world contexts.

This program is designed for K-12 educators seeking a PE endorsement from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). Courses include Methods of Teaching Physical Education and Activities, Methods of Teaching PE Skills/Individual Lifetime Activities, Methods of Teaching Fitness for Life, and Adapted PE. As a result of this training, students will be able to develop and implement various physical education lesson plans aligned to the Utah Core Standards and adapted for students with variable physical and cognitive abilities, monitor and evaluate student motor skills progression and exercise physiology in lifetime activities and fitness-for-life activities, develop and evaluate safe and effective personal fitness plans and how they impact mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being, and integrate adapted physical education skills, movement, and sports that allow students with disabilities to participate with their peers.

Positive psychology emphasizes the study of human strengths, positive emotions and well-being that can be applied to professional work settings and personal life. These 8-week, 100% online courses are offered every semester. Fit the weekly deadlines into your schedule as you work through the classes. Courses do not need to be taken in a certain sequence, but educators will take Intro to Positive Psychology and choose four additional electives. Successful completion of this five-course program qualifies a participant for the Positive Psychology Microcredential.

This 3-hour workshop is accessed via live webinar. As a result of this training participants will be able to define developmental stages and their impact on student behavior and academic performance, locate substitute teacher requirements and support information on various school district websites and other resources, and explain the importance of rules, procedures, and expectations in the classroom, school, and districts.
