Course Detail: CNAF - Nurse Assistant (CNA) Training Program (Face-to-Face)

Course Description
Lake Region State College's North Dakota Department of Health-approved non-credit 80-hour nurse assistant training program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to gain employment as a certified nurse assistant (CNA). Programming consists of a combination of Nurse Assistant theory, lab and 16 hours of clinical instruction. Students attend this in-person training according to a predetermined schedule.

Each class allows time for intensive and individualized instruction from an experienced long-term care RN instructor. All 80 hours of this training program are delivered in a face-to-face setting on the Lake Region State College Devils Lake, ND campus.

Units of study are introduction to long-term care, communication, infection control, safety, anatomy, physiology of aging, nutrition, skin care, and basic skills (personal care, transferring, positioning, vital signs, elimination, bed making).

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to take the state CNA exam.

Program Learning Objectives
  1. 1. Describe the roles and responsibility of nursing assistants including ethics, communication, legal responsibilities, abuse/neglect laws, residents' rights, and the North Dakota Department of Health regulations.
  2. 2. Identify basic restorative needs - promote the resident's ability to adapt and adjust to loving as independently and safely as possible and attain maximum functional potential. Be sensitive to the residents' physical, mental, and psychosocial needs.
  3. 3. Describe the functions of body systems appropriate to the nursing assistant scope of practice - assist residents to attain and maintain functional independence.
  4. 4. Demonstrate safety and infection control practices that comply with standards of practice for nursing assistants.
  5. 5. Demonstrate professional communication skills including recording and reporting, and legal and ethical responsibilities.
  6. 6. Demonstrate behaviors consistent with professional work ethics - including teamwork.
  7. 7. Comply with privacy and confidentiality laws.
  8. 8. Adhere to the policies and procedures of clinical sites including effective communication with residents and facility staff.
  9. 9. Demonstrate competence and proficiency in the following categories of skills: a) safety and infection control, b) personal care procedures, c) vital signs, d) nutritional requirements and techniques, e) exercise and activity, f) elimination, g) care to clients with special needs, h) care to clients with cognitive impairments, i) emergency procedures, and j) interpersonal skills.

Attendance
Students are required to meet a minimum of 75 hours of training (of which must include 16 clinical hours) in order to successfully complete the program (see sample training program syllabus for more information regarding the attendance policy). Limited make-up time may be available via a separate fee.

Student Requirements
Students must be 15 years of age by the start date of the course.

Nurse Assistant training requires students to perform specific technical skills regarding resident cares. Some skills require students to lift, carry, stand, sit, and walk consistently for an 8-hour period. English as a Second Language Students

Felony Disclosure
According to ND Administrative Code 33-43-01-03 and 33-43-01-22, CNA class applicants with a history that includes conviction of a crime substantially related to the qualification, functions, or duties of a certified nurse aide, home health aide, nurse aide, or medication assistant may not be allowed to begin the training program or take the state certification exam without providing specific information relating to their background, criminal history, or impairment. As arrest, conviction, plea, or adjudication that occurred as a juvenile or through juvenile court authorities also applies.

Students must complete a criminal history questionnaire at the time of enrollment in the course. All information disclosed will be reviewed by TrainND Northeast and, if necessary, by the North Dakota Department of Health before students will be allowed to begin class or test.

Students who have had a prior felony charge may want to inquire with the North Dakota Nurse Aide Registry regarding their eligibility to work as a CNA prior to registering for training.

State CNA Exam
Students are encouraged to take the state certified nurse assistant exam as soon as possible following training. Lake Region State College offers state CNA testing on approximately a monthly basis. Students are encouraged to register for the state exam at the same time as they register for training to secure a timely examination. The cost for the state CNA exam is $250. Students must register no later than one week prior to the exam date. Retesting is available at LRSC. Notice to Students Regarding Prohibition of Charge & Reimbursement Requirements
Students registering for state testing should review the memorandum from North Dakota Health and Human Services regarding being charged for enrollment in state CNA testing or a nurse aide training program. A link to this document can be found in the Additional Resources section below.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellation more than 5 days prior to start of training results in a 25% cancellation fee based on the class fee. Cancellation 5 days or less to the start of training results in no refund.

Schedule: Class will be held on the following days from 8:00am - 5:00pm: April 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 2024. Clinical will be held April 18 & 19, 2024 from 8:00am - 5:00pm. All class days including clinical will be held in person at the Lake Region State College Bergstrom Technical Center, 1801 College Dr N, Devils Lake, ND. Students will be given two 15 minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break each day.
