As the Industrial Revolution lured throngs of workers to ever more-congested cities, urban burial grounds became increasingly over crowded. Graves were stacked one atop another, and graveyards were blamed for the diseases seizing cities. A society, under the influence of Romanticism,moved toward reformation. This class examines how America Embraced cemeteries as cultural institutions and how rural cemeteries transformed the ways in which Americans thought about death and nature.
