T&L 2900: Disciplinary Literacy 301
This independent third-level course in the Disciplinary Literacy series focuses on deepening
implementation with attention to student engagement, classroom talk, and questioning. Educators will explore how disciplinary literacy practices-reading, writing, speaking, academic discussion, and critical thinking-affect student-centered learning, particularly with intentional planning within the block schedule.
Participants will use Amy Berry's Engagement Continuum to reflect on the difference between
compliance and engagement, and will collect classroom data in partnership with a coach. Additionally, this course reinforces how disciplinary literacy can be applied throughout the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model (I Do, We Do, You Do), using literacy at every phase:
- Previewing content (I Do)
- Collaborative practice (We Do)
- Independent application (You Do)
- Reflection and peer teaching (Extension)
Why this matters: When disciplinary literacy is embedded intentionally and consistently, students
engage more deeply in content, develop ownership of their learning, and make meaningful gains in
comprehension, retention, and application. Engaged students are more likely to think critically,
communicate clearly, and master disciplinary concepts.
