Course Detail: 335ROME - 335 Rome vs Clusium through the Eyes of Macaulay

Step into the world of ancient Rome with a deep dive into Thomas Babington Macaulay's Horatius at the Bridge. This epic poem recounts the quasi-mythical story of the heroic attempt of a small group of Roman soldiers to defend the city against an invading army from Clusium. In this session, we will explore the many geographic and cultural references embedded in the poem, unravel the etymology of key words, and analyze the rhythm and rhyme structure that gives the work its memorable cadence. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity, if desired, to memorize and recite brief passages in the poem. This session is tailored for those who are comfortable spending a few hours at the coffee shop located at the intersection of history avenue, poetry street and geography boulevard.
