Course Detail: STEM - STEM on the Saginaw River

There is much talk about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and how these skills will help with the economic development of our area. Many people approach science and engineering skills as if they are new to the Saginaw Bay Area but these talents and competencies built this region. The skills and knowledge of the logging industry led to the shipbuilding and chemical industry along with smaller industries such as kit homes and boats. The major shipbuilders such as Davidson, Wheeler, and Defoe used and added to the STEM techniques of their day. Some of the largest Great Lakes ships were built using the most innovative techniques of their time in Bay City. This class will highlight the STEM proficiencies of the major shipbuilders in Bay City. This class will also showcase how they have laid the groundwork from the 1800s on for what Bay City has become today. Course led by OLLI member Chris Eckerle.
