Course Detail: LANGUAGE - Language Matters from A to Z

Walking and talking come naturally but learning a language is another matter. The language we acquire in childhood serves us well enough for communication. Only later do we become sensitive to the nuances of vocabulary, master grammar and realize that our mother tongue is one of many. In this class we will explore the realm of language with all its diversity and then amuse ourselves with the rich complexity of English. We will consider the status of English as one of the world's nine dominant languages and become aware of the dynamic nature of words and language itself. The goal of this class is not only to inform but also to enjoy and ultimately to appreciate the luxuriance and illogic of everyday English. Leaning on the lore of lots of lexicon experts, Bob Enszer, retired teacher and longtime lover of lex, will try to lead lucidly.
