Course Detail: BOARDING - Boarding School Novels

Are you one of those people who always sort of envied students attending boarding school? Spend the warmer days ahead immersing yourself in a number of intriguing plots whose settings are various British and New England schools. We'll be starting on May 8 with John Williams' Stoner. The main character is born into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. When he goes to the state university to study agriculture, he gets drawn into the area of English literature. Next is R.F. Delderfield's To Serve Them All My Days. After enduring shell shock during World War I, David Powlette-Jones is trying to get his life back in order by teaching in an isolated British school. Marisha Pessl's Special Topics in Calamity Physics is our next selection. This brilliant book is about a clever young woman who has a wide grasp on science, literature, and music (these small details greatly enrich the texture of the book), but who doesn't have many friends. Our final book will be Donna Tartt's The Secret History. A charismatic classics professor attracts a group of misfit students whose lives wind up going beyond the boundaries of normal morality. Although the books are on the hefty side, they are compelling to read! Class led by OLLI member Rose Kohut.
