Course Detail: 328CHILE - 328 A Brief Introduction to the Physical and Cultural Geography of Chile - RESCHEDULED TO JULY 17

This course begins with an exploration of Chile's landscape, including the Atacama Desert in the North (the world's driest desert); the Central Valley (a landscape/climate akin to that of Southern California); and the fjords (drowned glacial valleys) of the South. The port of Valparaiso in the Central Valley is a major embarkation point for cruise ships. We will examine the unique urban structure of Valparaiso (Chile's most visited city by tourists), nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. A brief overview of Native American and Spanish colonial culture will be introduced before turning attention to the modern-day cultural landscape of Chile. We will then examine Chile's economic ties to the global economy: copper production; lithium production; and viticulture (growing grapes for wine) and the environmental issues related to these products.
