Course Detail: WTSS200 - Basic Solar Photovoltaic Systems

This 45-hour course meets weekly for 3 hours in-person or via live webinar and includes roughly 30 hours of online coursework over a 10-week period. Participants who complete this course will be able to identify the basic OSHA standards concerning possible hazards frequently seen in Photovoltaic (PV) system installation; explain the general permit and inspection process, including local codes and regulations; demonstrate the different PV system sizing methodologies for existing and future loads; and create a sales presentation which includes proper site survey, system design, components, pricing, monitoring, and benefits to a potential customer. This course is the second of two courses in the SLCC Solar Sales Program, or the second of three courses in the Solar Installation Program. Upon successful completion of the Solar Sales Program, participants may qualify for entry-level positions, including Solar Sales Representative, Solar Site Assessor, Energy Consultant, Solar Consultant, or Solar Systems Designer. Upon successful completion of the Solar Installation Program, participants may qualify for additional entry-level positions, including Solar Technician, Solar Systems Installer, Solar Sales Representative, or Solar Maintenance Technician.

Schedule: This is a Hybrid Course with online and in-person lab work. ** Canvas access is available August 28, 2025, through October 31, 2025. ** In-person sessions will be held at SLCC Westpointe Campus Room WTE-219, the SLCC Westpointe Campus Solar Training Yard, or via live webinar. Look for updates from the instructors in Canvas and in class.** In-person coursework will be 6pm to 9pm on Fridays beginning Friday August 29, 2025, and the final in-person session will be held October 31, 2025. ** Please watch for communication in Canvas, and from the instructors for weekly specifics. Note that due to observance of the Labor Day Holiday SLCC campuses will be closed and in-person classes will not be held on 09/01/2025.

** This is a 10-week Hybrid Course with online and in-person coursework; participants should plan to attend weekly in-person classes and complete roughly 30 hours of online coursework.** Students are responsible for ensuring their own participation and ensuring instructor(s) mark them as present.** Students will need to purchase the ATP Systems' Photovoltaic Systems 3rd Edition, and the Ugly's Electrical Reference to participate in the course (approximately $175 dollars new). ** In-person sessions will be held Fridays from 6-9pm at SLCC Westpointe Technical Education Center Room 219 or the Westpointe Campus Solar Training Yard 08/29-10/31/2025.** Participants should expect and watch for notifications from instructors and in Canvas for specifics regarding the in-person schedule and assignment due dates.
