Genealogy and Family History Writing
This course introduces students to various forms of genealogical and family history writing, such as a two-generation compiled/narrative genealogy, a document transcription with annotation research report, and a family history narrative. It also introduces students to reading, transcribing, and annotating historical handwriting, the nonfiction writing process, analysis and evaluation of genealogical research and sources, documentation styles, and copyright for genealogists. Additionally, this course offers students multiple opportunities to engage in the important tasks of peer review, revision, and incorporating feedback to revise their writing.

Genealogy-Tracing Immigrant Origins

Genealogy-Writing Life Stories
This course will enable students to develop competence in writing life stories by analyzing, organizing, and developing ideas. Students learn how to locate and use library and online resources for supporting ideas and how to adapt one's writing to various audiences. Instruction and practice in nonfiction writing styles and mechanics, documentation, and critical reading are the focus.

Genetic Genealogy
This course provides a thorough introduction to the relatively young field of genetic research within a genealogical and ancestral context. Students will learn the basics of genetic genealogy and how it is used to resolve family history research cases. They will learn methodologies and best practices for Y chromosome (Ycs), mitochondrial (mtDNA) and autosomal DNA (atDNA) test results and how to apply this knowledge in extending and verifying traditional genealogical research.

Intro to High-Tech Genealogy
This course includes an introduction to the genealogical research process and the use of computers in genealogy. The focus is on organizing your research process, gathering family information, choosing a research goal and making a plan, finding records, collecting and properly documenting evidence, and evaluating that evidence to reach a conclusion. You will complete a 10-hour project of your choosing to demonstrate what you have learned.
