Course Detail: PRS2 - Expanding Alternatives to Prison for Non-Violent Crimes - 3 CEUs Available

Nationally and in Illinois, there has been significant work to expand problem-solving courts as an alternative to incarcerating individuals in correctional facilities for non-violent crimes. Research shows that once individuals enter prison, they find themselves in a revolving door and lifetime in the criminal justice system. More than 3,000 Problem Solving Courts are established, aiming to reduce sentencing to prison. Instead, these highly specialized courts provide an alternative treatment for individuals assessed with behavioral health disorders while maintaining public safety. The court-supervised program requires participation in evidenced-based treatment and an array of community services. They promote positive outcomes that have proven to reduce recidivism.
