DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\n\nExpanding Alternatives to Prison for Non-Violent Crimes - 3 CEUs Available \n\n<span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 16.8667px; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Nationally and in Illinois, there has been significant work to expand problem-solving courts as an alternative to incarcerating individuals in correctional facilities for non-violent crimes. Research shows that once individuals enter prison, they find themselves in a revolving door and lifetime in the criminal justice system. More than 3,000 Problem Solving Courts are established, aiming to reduce sentencing to prison. Instead, these highly specialized courts provide an alternative treatment for individuals assessed with behavioral health disorders while maintaining public safety. The court-supervised program requires participation in evidenced-based treatment and an array of community services. They promote positive outcomes that have proven to reduce recidivism.</span><div><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 16.8667px; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 16.8667px; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">Specific learning objectives:<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">1.<span style="font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>Acquire knowledge of the history and development of&nbsp;&nbsp;problem solving-treatment courts<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">2.<span style="font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>Learn about the various types of problem solving courts (PSC's)<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">3.<span style="font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>Increase awareness of the current movement to expand PSC's in Illinois through planning and implementation initiatives.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">4.<span style="font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>Gain an understanding of the key, foundational elements of PSC treatment programs.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">5.<span style="font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>Examine the effectiveness and outcomes of problem solving courts.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"><br></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin-left: 33.3pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">SIUE is an approved CEU provider by the State of Illinoisfor social work continuing education.
