Learn to recognize and identify signs and symptoms of sport concussion and intracranial hematoma. Understand the difference between them.  Recognize the most common facial injuries in sport.  Understand the treatment of various oral, eye, ear and nasal injuries.

Detailed course objectives:

1.     Recognize and identify signs and symptoms of sport concussion.

  • Describe and develop return to activity and return to learn plans for an athlete who has sustained a concussion.
  • Conduct a sideline sport concussion examination and interpret the findings of the sport concussion exam.
  • Describe the mechanism of injury of sport concussion.
  • Differentiate between cervical spine strain and concussion signs and symptoms.
  • Identify proper management a cervical spine injury as it relates to sport concussion.
  • Identify nutritional intervention that may aid in recovery from sport concussion.
  • Recognize the legal aspects associated with evaluation, diagnosis and management of sport concussion.

2.     Recognize and identify signs and symptoms of intracranial hematoma.

3.     Recognize the difference in signs and symptoms between intracranial hematoma and sport concussion.

  • Describe the similarities and differences between subdural, epidural, intracerebral hematoma.
  • Describe signs and symptoms associated with increased intracranial pressure.

4.     Recognize the most common facial injuries that occur in sport.

5.     Demonstrate understanding of the treatment of various oral, eye, ear and nasal injuries occurring in sport.
