A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view. When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, who recently returned to town. Thus begins the transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the promise of the free states and beyond. While many narrative set pieces of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place, Jim's agency, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light. The Sheltons were called "America's Bloodiest Gang" by the Saturday Evening Post in 1950. They reigned mostly in southern Illinois from the Roaring '20s through the 1940s. Taylor Pensoneau will return to ALL with stories of the Shelton gang's exploits and copies of his book for sale. On a lighter note and as a finale to the 2024-25 History Hunters program, Sally Cadagin will give a short talk on the Carrie Post King's Daughters Home for Women and the King's Daughters Organization (postponed from an earlier date). A surprise will follow the program. This event is for Academy of Lifelong Learning members.
